How to Choose Your Kitchen Sink

There are many things to consider when redesigning your kitchen. And as the saying goes, you may worry about everything, but the kitchen sink! This may be one of the biggest oversights, for a good sink is essential to the functionality of a kitchen. There are three main things to consider when choosing a kitchen sink: mounting, materiality, and styles.

There are two ways to mount your sink. You can under mount the fixture. This puts the sink under the level of the countertop. The edge of the counter drops directly into the basin. This can aid in cleaning. You can also top mount your sink. This type of sink is also known as a drop in sink. The contractor will cut a hole in the counter top material and literally drop the sink into place. Some like this style because they feel it creates a more finished look.

Kitchen sinks are most often made of stainless steel or cast iron. Gage is a term used to describe the thickness of a metal sink. A 16 or 18 gage is typical for a kitchen sink. Sometimes though, they are made of a granite or quartz composite. These are referred to as composite sinks. Another type of kitchen sinks are fireclay ceramic sinks. Sinks can also be made of copper, glass, granite, and marble.

There are more or less three styles of sinks. They vary slightly, but more or less a sink is a single bowl, a double bowl, or a farmhouse style. The single and double basin sinks are pretty self-explanatory; each has one basin or two. The farmhouse sink has one large basin, but is not referred to as a single bowl sink because of a front portion of the sink that can be seen on the front part of the cabinetry. One downside of farmhouse sinks is all the water it takes to fill it; however, they create a wonderful look in the right home.
