Tips on Selecting the Perfect Throw Pillows

Throw pillows are the perfect accessory to add a pop of color or texture to an otherwise plain piece of furniture of space.  There are endless options when it comes to throw pillows, which makes the decision of selecting your pillows that much harder.  So, how do you choose the right ones?  There isn’t necessarily a right or wrong answer when it comes to accessorizing your space, but here are a few tips that will help you when selecting throw pillows.

  1. Size : First and foremost, you want to make sure you are choosing pillows that are in proper proportion to your furniture pieces, meaning that the size of your pillows will be dictated by the size of your sofa or chair.  Typically, sofa throw pillows are between 16 and 18 inches, squared. If your pillow is too small, it will look out of place, however, the use of an oversized pillow can be used to create a lounge-like feel.
  2. Number of Pillows : Most people think it is always best to go with an odd number of pillows, however that is not necessarily true.  Depending on what look you are going for, don’t be afraid to have some symmetry or asymmetry. If you want four pillows on your sofa, pick two pairs of pillows, one larger and one smaller.  Make sure to mix up the patterns, preferably choosing two pillows, one in a solid color and the other two in a pattern or texture.  If you are having to move your pillows to sit comfortably, then you probably have too many.
  3. Shape : There are four basic pillow shapes - bolster, square, rectangle, and round.  Typically, square and rectangle pillows are used as simple throw pillows because of their versatility. It is important to keep in mind how these pillows will be used, if at all. It is also key to consider the aesthetic of your furniture.  Once you have you decided how the pillows will be used, choose the pillow shape that works best for your needs.
  4. Pattern and Color : Selecting the colors and patterns of your pillow is the fun part, but it can often be troubling. The key is to maintain the style and color tones of your existing space, as well as bringing out some brighter colors.  If you have two pillows sitting side by side, make them different - one solid color, one patterned.  Choose prints that include the neutral tones of your space. When mixing patterns, make sure that there is one common color, aside from a neutral, and be sure to vary the pattern size - one large and one small.
  5. Style : The overall style of your space is important to keep in mind as well.  If you have a very traditional space, velvets, silk, and decorative pillow trims work well. On the other hand, more contemporary spaces prefer a more limited palette, large geometric patterns and smooth cottons and linens. Contemporary spaces also typically tend to have large sized pillows, in smaller numbers and spaced apart.

Changing out your throw pillows is an easy and budget-friendly way to give your space a whole new look and it is also a great way to express your personality.  Don’t forget to contact us if you need any assistance with your next project!
