What Makes a Great Family Space

Now and days, it seems that we are all so busy that we do not have time to sit down, relax and enjoy some time with our family, but it is important to have a space within the home where the whole family can gather.  The family room is a common location for family members to converge, but it does not have to be the only one. Whether an indoor space or an outdoor oasis, such as a basement or outdoor deck/patio, both are perfect spaces in which collaborative and laid-back environments can be created.

Amy Youngblood Interiors is currently working on two different projects: an outdoor living space and a basement.  The floor plans for both spaces can be seen here, in which we also see some key components of the quintessential family gathering space.  It is important to have enough seating, and then some, in a variety of options, to allow for comfort and relaxation.  These seating options can also help to create different zones within the existing space. The space can be formal or informal, which is typically dictated by the furnishings. The space can also include entertainment.  If you are creating a basement hangout, you may want to include a large TV projection to watch movies or sports, or you could add a sound system to an outdoor patio space.

Lastly, you want to make sure you have the appropriate decor.  If you have small children it is probably best to avoid breakable items, but if you have older children there is much more variety and flexibility in decor and accessories. When these spaces are designed properly and accessorized, lively and vibrant sanctuaries can be created that help bring families to spend more time together.  If you are looking for some help to create a great family space, give AYI a call
