How your Personal Space Impacts your Mood

Having a home that looks great is everyone’s goal right? While that is a great goal to have, think beyond just appearance. Our spaces can affect our lives without us even realizing it. So, this entry is part one of a series of four that will explain just a few ways that our spaces influence our lives.

As part one of this series we will be looking at how our spaces impact our mood. We will be guiding you through four key ways you can improve your home and as a result improve your mood!

Lighting always plays a part in how a space feels. If your space is poorly lit it does not feel as welcoming or feel like space you want to spend a lot of time in. Now it may seem obvious, but let's compare your space to the weather… After a long dreary winter the first sunny spring day feels extremely refreshing and instantly makes the winter blues fade away. Same goes with lighting, if you have a space with an undesirable amount of light, imagine how much better you will feel when it is lighter and brighter. You can achieve this with both natural and artificial lighting. While natural lighting is always desired, make sure you have plenty of artificial light as well. This can be accomplished with overhead lighting, task lighting, or accent lighting such as lamps.

2. Paint Color

Paint is one of the easiest and most cost-effective ways to dramatically change a space. Try using calming colors such as blues, greens, and warm greys to give your spaces a calm atmosphere. For your main living spaces try to keep your colors light, bright, and soothing. If you want to go bold with color its often best to do it in smaller or not as frequently used spaces such as a powder room or dining room.

3.Personal touches

Everyone wants their home to look like it belongs in a magazine but don’t forget that it is YOUR space. Add personal touches such as photographs, artwork or heirlooms that mean something to you or that you are drawn to.

4. Plants

Plants have a lot of benefits that most people don't know about. They are known to affect your mood, stress level, blood pressure, promote faster healing, and even purify the air. There are many studies that show adding some greenery into your life proves to be beneficial.
